Lyrically, *Totentanz* follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, *Fall of Humanity*, where modern society stands by, helpless and powerless, as atrocities—such as wars and genocides—unfold across the globe. The album offers a musical and poetic reflection on death in its many manifestations. Musically, the style remains largely unchanged, though the sound here is somewhat more distinctive and less derivative than in the past, featuring slightly more varied riffing.
